great portraits #6

Alessandro Botticelli, Portrait of Dante c.1495. Tempera on canvas

Botticelli painted this portrait of Dante around 1495, by which time the famous Florentine poet had been dead for over 170 years. So it's a homage to the author of 'The Divine Comedy' rather than a life-like representation, but it's still a marvellous painting.
